General Assembly's 68 th Session

Further push to achieve anti-poverty targets to be focus of UN General Assembly's 68 th Session

The General Assembly is opening its 68 th Session on 17 September with a focus on the theme: "The Post-2015 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage." In these changing times, global leaders and citizens everywhere are coming together to reshape the world and the lives of its inhabitants. This is also the aim of the several high-level events which will be held at the UN Headquarters, which, taken together, represent a turning point in our collective approach to dealing with the problems faced today by people and the planet.

Millennium Development Goals, post-2015 development agenda

On 23 September the UN Secretary-General will hold a day-long event on MDG Success: Accelerating Action, Partnering for Impact, which will highlight several high-profile initiatives including Every Woman Every Child, Zero Hunger Challenge, Scaling Up Nutrition, Global Education First and the Deputy Secretary-General's Call to Action on Sanitation.

The President of the 68 th General Assembly, John William Ashe, will hold a Special Event on the MDGs on 25 September, where the Secretary-General will present " A Life of Dignity for All" - his new report on accelerating progress towards the MDGs and advancing the UN development agenda beyond 2015.

Sustainable development, Rio+20

The 20th and final session of the Commission on Sustainable Development will be held on 20 September. The Commission, will now be largely replaced by the High-level Political Forum on sustainable development which will hold its first meeting on 24 September. On the same day the Secretary-General will announce his plans for a 2014 Climate Summit in his address to the General Assembly. The summit, which will take place one year ahead of the 2015 Climate Change Conference - when countries have said they would finalize a binding climate agreement - will focus on mobilizing and catalyzing action on climate change.
