General Assembly Appoints Contributions Committee Member
NEW YORK, 6 June (UN Headquarters) -- In a brief meeting this morning, the General Assembly appointed, by acclamation, Henrique da Silveira Sardinha Pinto (Brazil) as a member of the Committee on Contributions, for a term of office beginning today and expiring on 31 December 2005. He will fill the remainder of the term of Alvaro Gurgel de Alencar (Brazil), following his resignation.
The Assembly also took note of the fact that Malawi has made the necessary payment to reduce its arrears below the amount specified in Article 19 of the Charter, which stipulates that a Member State whose debt to the Organization is equal or exceeds the amount of the contributions due from it for the preceding two full years, would have no vote in the General Assembly.
The Assembly will hold its next meeting at a date to be announced.
