The NGO Committee on Peace, Vienna in cooperation with the
United Nations (Vienna) will commemorate

Sixty Years after the Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The nuclear bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945 have made the world realize that preventing the use of nuclear weapons and of other weapons of mass destruction are goals of the highest priority for the international community and its organizations.  Though some important measures have been taken, tens of thousands of nuclear weapons are still in the arsenals.  Efforts for banning any use of nuclear weapons, for non-proliferation and for nuclear disarmament must be intensified.

on the Memorial Plaza of the Vienna International Centre.

The Peace Bell will be rung to mark the event, and the message of the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be read.
