Press Briefing on the opening day of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna

At the Press briefing on the opening day of the 19th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice the speakers were Ambassador Eugenio María Curia (Argentina), Chair, Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and John Sandage, Officer-in-Charge, Division for Treaty Affairs, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).  It was moderated by UNIS Vienna Director, Maher Nasser. They highlighted the theme of the session which is the protection against illicit trafficking in cultural property. Members States will be considering how best to protect and preserve their cultural heritage in the face of growing involvement of organized criminal groups in all aspects of trafficking in cultural property.  The Commission will also review the conclusions and recommendations of the Twelfth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in April in Salvador, Brazil. Trends in world crime and emerging issues in crime prevention and criminal justice will be discussed as well as ratification and implementation of the Conventions and international instruments covering Transnational Organized Crime, Corruption and Terrorism.
