The UN Communication Group in Vienna held its first press breakfast of 2010 on 20 January at the Press Club Concordia with spokespeople from the Vienna based United Nations agencies and international organizations. The speakers highlighted major events and conferences coming up in 2010 and some of the issues that the VIC-based organizations and the United Nations in general would focus on in the coming 12 months and an update on the situation in Haiti. A new handbook for journalists accredited to the United Nations in Vienna was also distributed along with a 2010 calender of events and observances. Introductory remarks were made by Maher Nasser (UNIS), Mikhail Evstafyev (UNIDO), Gill Tudor (IAEA), Annika Thunborg (CTBTO) and Alun Jones (UNODC).

2009 - a year when arctic ice was melting faster than ever before and multiple crises - food, energy, recession or pandemic flu - called for global cooperation on an unprecedented level. At the same time, peacekeepers served in missions around the world and the fight against hunger and poverty continued.

It was a year when UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo and reminded the world that sexual violence against women there, and everywhere, was an abomination and had to be stopped. Despite multiple conflicts - in Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan or Somalia - there was hope that an old remnant of the Cold War would finally melt, when the Presidents of Russia and the USA expressed their strong desire in the Security Council to cut down their nuclear arsenals.

May 2010 bring peace, development and human rights to all of us.
